“ A Woman Holding a Pink ” strikes for the simplicity of its concept, the strength of its execution and the nobility of its character, qualities that have long aroused admiration.

The pink carnation that the woman holds in her hand is traditionally associated with the sacrament of marriage, a recurring symbol of union and fidelity. A second meaning is linked to the Dutch name of the flower, nagelbloem (“nail flower”), which recalls the Crucifixion of Christ.

In family portraits, the carnation thus takes on the symbolic value of a conjugal love that finds its roots in the divine love represented by the Passion of Christ.

The meaning is further enriched by the still life on the table: the book with brass clasps is most likely a Bible, while the apples evoke the legacy of original sin, which the woman is called to overcome through her faith.

The frame, entirely hand-made, faithfully reproduces the style of the 16th century Sienese boxes , among the most elegant forms of the Italian Renaissance tradition.

In raw wood with reinforced corners, it is prepared with 4 coats of chalk and 3 coats of natural bole, on which the gold leaf is applied in gouache, spread manually. The gilding is burnished with agate stone, patinated with tempera and finished with wax and shellac.

Each side and each corner is enriched with hand-painted decorative friezes , giving the whole a handcrafted character that makes each frame a unique work of art.

🧵 Linen Canvas of Artisan Excellence

The support is a very high quality linen canvas , worked according to artisanal methods with natural materials and centuries-old techniques in the Flemish tradition and mastery.

Made from high-quality linen grown along the Leie River, it is subjected to strict quality controls and treated with natural rabbit glue applied hot to protect the fibres and ensure perfect tension. This is followed by several manual layers of plaster , left to dry slowly and naturally for several days to create a compact and stable surface.

The result is a noble, durable and material support, the fruit of a savoir-faire handed down over the centuries that makes each canvas a unique piece of authentic value.
